DAY 1 MEDIEVAL CITY OF CARCASSONNE

 

Arrive at Carcassonne in the afternoon. Meet in the medieval city (a Unesco Global Heritage Site since 1997) for a tour of the Château Comtal and the ramparts of the City of Carcassonne: the courts, the palace and the dungeon, the chemins de ronde, a presentation of the restoration of the City of Carcassonne by Viollet le Duc by means of film and models… A stroll in the City allows you to discover the Porte Narbonnaise (an authentic defence bastion), the exterior ramparts, curtain walls and the gothic Norman architecture of the St Nazaire and St Celse basilica.

DAY 2 CARCASSONNE - La Bastide Saint Louis

 

Breakfast at the hotel.

Next, learn whilst having fun with the interactive Medieval show, the Middle Ages on stage (le Moyen-âge en Scène): Musicians, dancers, choreographed battles with real weapons: an intense and emotional experience! Next, you are free to admire the work of the blacksmith, the room holding weapons and musical instruments used by the troubadours such as the heavenly sounds of the ala bohemica or the bagpipes of Puivert.

Lunch in a restaurant of the Bastide.

Extend your discovery of the town below Carcassonne with a walk: la place Carnot, la maison des mémoires (the house of memories), the musée des Beaux-Arts, private hotels, the port de plaisance on the Canal du Midi…

Dinner and overnight stay at your hotel.

 

 

DAY 3 Canal du Midi or Moulin à Papier (Paper Mill) and châteaux en Cabardès

 

Breakfast at the hotel. Subject to the time of year, you have some optional activities. One of which is a walk and river cruise including the lock on the Canal du Midi; this is an opportunity to discover Pierre-Paul Riquet’s masterpiece by travelling down the canal itself, which is also classed as a World Heritage site and was built under the reign of the Roi Soleil (Louis XIV).chateaux en cabardès

Another option is the guided tour of the Paper Mill, which will tell you everything you need to know about the activities of the papermaker and the paper manufacturing at the gates of Carcassonne.

Free lunch.

A visit to the 4 châteaux de Lastours, which are situated about 15km outside of Carcassonne. These are a beautiful architectural ensemble and acted as the barrier of Cabardès during the crusade against the Cathars.
